PostGIS is an extension to PostgreSQL. In 2020 new branch, 3.0, got released. It brings substantial rework in Mapbox Vector Tiles support letting your services deliver to the web without a dedicated map server, enhances support for triangulations and TIN representation of 3D surfaces, heavily optimized indexing support including Hilbert curve ordering, and Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF raster support.
